I didn’t want to spend a fortune, and I didn’t want a coat that looked like anyone else’s.

As soon as I put this thought out to the universe, I found this coat at a thrift store in Nyack, NY. It is a size 8, but it must be an 8 in giant world cuz it’s HUUUUUUGE on me. I thought I’d take on the challenge of tailoring it to fit me. I thought it was just going to be a simple side take-in job but the more I tinker with it, I think I’m going to gut it and make it into a different style. I took sewing in high school but couldn’t tell you much I remember past that you need a 3/4 inch seam and you need to cut little nips into curved seams. And that darts are helpful on the butt of skirts for gals with junk in the trunk. I could buy a coat pattern i guess, but I like the idea of letting the coat teach me about itself while I tinker with its construction.

Here are some coats I like the look of. Obviously I like the look of the small waisted coats, with generous space for curves.
